Old Malmö, by Ola Cedell
All around the oldest part of Malmo, with branches to the Malmöhus Castle, is “Malmo channels”. In the city of parks runs the 4 km long channel, the widest 90 m, and this image along Norra Vallgatan is the deepest, i.e. 3.6 m. The channels consist partly of old moats, while the East and Southern suburb channels were established after the city fortification demolished in the early 1800s and the city thereby expanded. Malmö’s canals, docks and bridges since the late 1600s has been under the constant influence of new buildings and new business start-ups. The existing canal system was completed in 1821 and today it is used for fishing, rowing, canoeing, water bike rentals, and tourist boats.
