Australia’s rural landscape is dotted with crumbling homes that stand as silent monuments to the country’s first settlement. At first less obvious, though far more meaningful evidence of the changes that have resulted from settlement, are the radically changed landscapes that these old frontier homes stand in. The fields around Burra in South Australia are a vast display of how man can erase biological diversity and replace for the purpose of producing just a single cash crop: wheat.

Thanks for taking this photo that I was in too much of a rush to take. Burra SA is a dry old place. The deep cellars where they tried to keep food and drink cool still have some “ghosts”. If you’re lucky enough to explore South Australia, get up to the desolate places as well as the winery’s.
