River of No Return Sunset, by John Peltier
Backpacking through the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness in Idaho, USA can be exhausting. Snow on the trail made the going slow, and we never made it to the lake that we were planning to stop at and catch fish for dinner. We hiked until it started to get dark and set camp beneath the pines, and were rewarded with this sky.
Award Winner: Photo of the Day | February 02
Photo of the Day Award Category: Sunrise & Sunset Photography
Photograph Location: The Frank Church—River of No Return Wilderness Area, Idaho | The United States
Photographer: John Peltier (Clayton, North Carolina, USA) Registered
John’s interest in photography started at the age of 17 during a photography class in his home town in Lake Tahoe, where there are unbelievable photographic opportunities. Photography has been more or less just a hobby for John for over ten years, until 2009 when he started to take it more seriously. He has gone from just taking pictures, to focusing more on composition and technical aspects. John’s favorite photographic subjects are landscapes, including hard-to-reach places with interesting and unknown stories, and has lately been trying to fuse history with his landscape photos. He has carried photographic equipment through jungles, deserts, and mountains just to be able to share these places with people who otherwise wouldn’t see them.

this is my first visit and I just wanted to stop by to say hello to everyone.
Rafting down the River of No Return Wilderness throughout the Summer, we get to see this a couple of times each season. Sunrise in the Frank Church is amazing. Some of our best memories come from watching our guests see things like this for the first time, in person. Nice shot – you’re making me wish for Summer!
