An Exclusive Interview with Nirupam Roy

Nirupam Roy is from a small town Tufanganj, located in CoochBehar District in WestBengal, India. Being a school teacher, entering into this unique arena is really dramatic for him. Going to school he always thinks about the phenomena of the society, but could not understand how the common yet beautiful aspects can be modified represented. Though he has done some documentary video works in YouTube, but it did not satisfy him. Then in one summer he planned a family trip to Orrisa, India. There he realized the necessity of a camera to capture the scenic beauty of the place surrounded by several sea-coasts. At the same time he wanted to photograph his family, especially his son Arkapravo, and bought his first camera Canon SX 40 HS. After returning home, he has fallen in love with photography passionately, and bought the DSLR, NikonD5000. Now-a-days friends rebuked him by telling that camera becomes his only obsession. But Nirupam believes it becomes his passion because he always thinks how the new concept of photography can be produced. Photography completely changes his whole attitude towards nature and human being. It gives him a sort of peace to his weary mind, as if a blessings from Almighty.

In this “Exclusive Interview” section, today we have the opportunity to talk with Nirupam Roy, as his photograph was winner of Photo of the Month – 24th Month, 3rd Place. Let’s discover his forays into photography in An Exclusive Interview with Nirupam Roy.

Light & Composition: Hello, Nirupam Roy. How does it feel, being selected as the winner of Photo of the Month, 3rd Place, May 2012?Nirupam Roy: It’s really fascinating to me. Thanks Light and Composition to provide me your precious platform. I think of myself as a learner of this vast field. So many experienced and unique photographers are here, from whom I got the inspiration. It seems to me that I have given the privilege considering the award though the opportunity also support and pump up my enthusiasm and ongoing expectation. Undoubtedly this will help me in my perfection.

L&C: The photograph, “Out of Syllabus”, which was selected as Photo of the Month, is a beautiful Documentary photograph with an artistic perspective, correct lighting, and very well presented. Overall, this is a great composition! Tell us more about your experience of taking this photograph.
Nirupam: Infect I was about to do some macro works. It was in front of this classroom in Kendriya Navodaya Vidyalaya.It was the break time and as usual they were doing some naughty things which attract me. I stopped my macro work and shifted my lens to them. It was very tough to handle those little ones because they were on top of the building and I took their photos according to their wish.

L&C: Besides this winning photograph, many people liked and voted for several others of your photographs in the Photo of the Month contest. You must be proud. How do you see your journey to the world of photography so far?Nirupam: Obviously proud, here I could capture the precious attention of the knowledgeable persons. It definitely will encourage me to walk with lot of confidence.

L&C: As we know, you are originally from Coochbehar, West Bengal, which has its own rich diverse cultural and artistic heritage. Do you think depicting life in West Bengal portrays a different essence? How much does that influence your work?Nirupam: It is true that Coochbehar’s artistic and colorful heritage involves every photographer to make photography with fragrance. The land is decorated with hills and rivers, so landscape is very common, but what is more important is its inhabitants, and their way of life. Yes, now-a-days I am very much interested in that to make my project on the culture and the way of life of the heritage folk.

L&C: We see so many different genres of photography in your portfolio. Do you like a particular genre of photography?

Nirupam: Well, I want to unfold the untold story of the colorful society, my lens is ready now for the candid and portrait without edit or manipulation. Arranged photography is not likable. It becomes a challenge to me and for that I am trying to make a group to make it possible.

L&C: One of the keys to any style of photography is visualization. Please tell us how you started this process and what you did afterwards.Nirupam: To me first of all it is necessary to visit the location, the light, the people, the culture, to make it easy to target the camera because everyone is shaky in front of the camera. To get perfection on my target, it is very important not to stir the place. I believe it is essential to give them confidence about me and my equipments. It is also necessary to cope yourself with the place.

L&C: Nirupam, have you ever exhibited your work? If so, then tell us about your first exhibiting experience.
Nirupam: No, till not now, but hope to do in recent future.

L&C: Are you involved with any photography organizations? How does this help you in your photography?Nirupam: I am from very small town where people have not much aware about photography. We are trying to build a photography club, let’s see what can be done in future. Hope it will expand the work for our ancestors.

L&C: What advice would you give our readers who want to take part in the journey around the world with Photo of the Day?Nirupam: Believe in your photography, skill, and confidence. Patience is the key. Watching of other’s great works and sharing thoughts will certainly improve the skill of the art. I don’t like to copy the thoughts of others but try to create new concept out of it. It is also a hand-eye contact game. Flash the thing as early as possible.
