This was the beginning of my exploration of the slums in the Smoky Mountain area. Smoky Mountain is a well-known district that is located on a garbage dump and has a characteristic view of the surrounding areas. I decided to do this trip on a one-day stopover in Manila. I hired a taxi driver for the day and we drove to the Smoky Mountain area. We met this gentleman at the very entrance to a narrow street “cut” out of a town cobbled together from corrugated iron and cardboard. He greeted us with a Victoria gesture.
