Histories of Our Ancestors
Mankind has been around for thousands of years, or maybe even longer. What do we know of those years? Some histories were burnt with fire, some washed away, and some were broken into ruins. Looking at those retrograde walls that man built over their ancestors’ history; they speak of bygone eras, provoking a sense of nostalgia, and make us contemplate the journey of the past.
Photographer Mehmet Masum Süer took this photograph, “Gate of Castle”, in Diyarbakir, in southeastern Turkey, which is known for this historic wall. When I saw this photograph in our Photo of the Day Award section, I realized the photograph tells us about that past. The woman walking away from the gate, her shadow on the wall, gives me the feeling of how we are leaving behind our past; walking towards the present, with the gift of life we have, carrying the histories of our ancestors.
